‘Unity Through the Arts’ self-guided tour Oct. 12
Venues featuring local art, music, poetry and theater will be featured during this year’s “Unity Through the Arts” self-guided tour on Saturday, October 12 during Colorfest Weekend.
Organizations that worked to produce a brochure and map of the venues and information about the art events include the Anna Arts Center, Illinois Small Business Development Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Imagining Geographies – SIU, River‐to‐River Visual Arts Association, SIU Office of Economic and Regional Development, Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau, Union County Economic Development and the Union County Museum.

The brochure will be available at cabins, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, wineries, galleries and public buildings throughout Union County, as well as being distributed as a file that can be uploaded to websites and social media platforms.
The collaboration’s goals are to help individual artists and arts and cultural organizations promote their work in Union County and southern Illinois, and to recognize the contributions made by the creative industries to the cultural, economic, and social well‐being of the region.

“Arte Michoacana from Cobden,” an exhibit with works by Juana Duran, Lilia Duran, Catalina Charicata and Elizabeth Duran is on display through Oct. 27. Sand painting, photography and traditional Mexican embroidery/crochet will be featured. A public reception will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. as part of the “Unity for the Arts” Colorfest weekend.

River to River Visual Arts Association present the “Colorfest of Arts” gallery showfeaturing original paintings, fiber art, woodworking, jewelry and sculptures by regional artists. Gallery show is open Friday, Oct. 11 from 6 – 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 – 4 p.m.
Anna Arts Center and PAST present “Canteen,” a play adapted by Dr. Lynn Steveson about a World War II home front story from Bob Greene’s book, “Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen.” Show times are Fridays, Oct. 11 and 18 at 7 p.m. and Sundays, Oct. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

“The Kings of Little Egypt” is a literary reading, presented by The Blue Billies, explores the kings of southern Illinois, including King Neptune, Pizza King or the King of Beers. Theatrical vignettes extolling the kingly qualities of the common man (and woman) are woven together with music.

Pumpkin Town is an annual display of vignettes created by the area’s businesses and residents using pumpkins, bales of hay, mums and a wide variety of other materials. Driving through Pumpkin Town is one of Colorfest’s most popular activities.
