2013 VULTUREFEST:  MUSIC FOOD AND FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

        It's October, and the vultures are back, along with all of the music, food, and old fashioned family fun.  Vulture Fest 2013 returns to historic downtown Makanda for two days of art, music, and memories Saturday and Sunday, October 19th and 20th.

         One of Southern Illinois' most beloved fall traditions, Vulture Fest not only celebrates the return of Makanda's world famous and legendary vultures, but also features the best that the land between the rivers has to offer.  The two day event, which draws visitors from across the nation, will feature not only the hypnotic antics of the fabled vultures, but also the beautiful handcrafted artwork of more than forty artisans and craftspeople from around the tri-state region, who will be on-hand with handcrafted gifts, all made in the U.S.A.  From paintings to jewelry to handmade soaps and lotions, downtown Makanda will be the place to find that special item for the holidays beginning at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday.  For those who can't attend a festival without their stomach growling, there will be plenty to choose from, with the downtown and boardwalk areas coming alive with an endless array of vendors cooking up festival favorites like corndogs, funnel cakes, hamburgers, chili, curly fries, pulled pork, and everything else to whet the appetite.  Kids of all ages will enjoy face painting by renowned artist Anne Berbling, and the beautiful fall Makanda landscape courtesy of Mother Nature.

        Of course no Vulture Fest would be complete without music, and this year a dozen local music acts from genres reaching across the musical spectrum supply entertainment in Makanda's famous Pavilion and Rainmaker's Garden.  Saturday brings the sounds of Moving Mary, Jenny Johnson, Hobo Knife, Fiddle Rick, Barry Cloyd, and RogNBob, while Sunday Vulture Fest attendees will be treated to the sounds of Cutting Jessies, Swamp Tigers, Well Well Wells, Todd Pierson, New Arts Jazztet, and Big Larry and Friends.  From folk-rock to gypsy stomp to singer/songwriter to jazz to blues, regardless of musical taste Vulture Fest 2013 will offer something for everybody.  Don't miss out on the fun, or the vultures!  For more information visit Vulture Fest on Facebook @ makandaboardwalkevents or contact them by email at makandafestevents@gmail.com.

LEAA SHOW: Weird Places & Weird Faces Oct. 31

“That House” – November 2, 2013 – Varsity Center for the Arts, Carbondale, IL

Introduction

The 57 Nomads is offering a unique experience for local and regional artists who are currently or formerly connected with the SIU or Carbondale Community to display their original works of art.  The purpose of the “That House” exhibition is to offer visual artists, writers, musicians and creators of other interdisciplinary artforms the opportunity to share their creative output and exhibit in a public forum among the community, friends and peers.  This is not a juried exhibition, although all submissions will be subject to approval.

Theme

The theme of the exhibition is about houses that intrigue us and scare us a little, make us think of ghosts or poverty and decay or the weirdness of culture.  Have you ever driven by a house and thought, “I wonder what goes on in That House?” Then, maybe you mentioned it to a friend and they said, “Oh, That House! I know exactly which house you’re talking about.” This is about That House.

Your contribution might be based on a childhood memory or more recent experience, a dream, movie or book that has stuck with you. It may be about haunted houses, abandoned houses, lost houses, dollhouses, party houses.  Everyone is encouraged to provide their own interpretation of what “That House” means to them.

Exhibit space and duration 

The Varsity Center for the Arts is located on the strip in downtown Carbondale, Illinois.    Art will be exhibited on Saturday, November 2nd, 2013 from 5pm-10pm. This will be an event for all ages and alcohol might be served at a cash bar on the premises.  All work in the exhibit must be picked up at the venue on November 3rd, 2013.

More event at the Anna Arts Center

Sunday, September 29, 2-4 pm: Closing Reception of “Visions and Dreams” Exhibition

·         A mixed media and collage works of art.

·         “En plein air” watercolor painting.

·         Marie’s technique of using layering in her artwork yields unusual effects that will catch the viewer’s attention.

·         Open to the public and everyone is invited. It is a free event.

Monday, September 30, and Wednesday, October 2, from 5 to 7 pm: Auditions for the Las Posadas play

·         Las Posadas celebrates Joseph and Mary's journey to Bethlehem and their search for shelter prior to the birth of Christ.

·         Parts for 28 kids from 4 years old to 18 years old and for 10 adults from 19 to 100 years old.

·         The 4 to 5 year olds will be sheep, cows, camels, and other animals that they desire to be.

·         Rehearsals will be twice a week and the cast must attend at least one of the rehearsals.

·         The Las Posadas Celebration will be Sunday, November 24, 2 pm

Saturday, November 30, 10 am to 5 pm: Downtown Anna Christmas Celebertion Holiday Bazaar

·         The Holiday Bazaar was created by the Anna Arts Center for talented artists and crafters to exhibit and sell.

·         Opportunity for you to display that one-of-a-kind gift.

·         Space is a 10 x 10 square with a table if desired. Cost is only $25, so grab your friends to split the cost and register today. 

·         Live music will be featured throughout the event.

October Events at the Anna Arts Center

1. Quilting Bees’ Rummage Sale:  Friday and Saturday, October 4 and 5, from 8 am until 2 pm.   Donations for the Rummage Sale are Welcomed! If anyone wants to donate an item or two for the rummage sale, you can deliver the items to the Anna Arts Center Monday - Thursday from 9 am to 12, noon until October 3. 

2. Haunted House of Horrors at Abandon Fire Station: Do you have the nerve to take a walk through the fire station of horrors?    Open every Friday and Saturday in October starting October 4 & Halloween, 7:30 to 10:30 pm       Admission is $5 or group of 6 for $20. 

3. The Play “CANTEEN,” A Story of the World War II Home Front:        Based on the book “Once Upon a Town” written about North Platte, Nebraska by the noted author Bob Greene.   Dr. Lynn Steveson of the Anna area wrote the script and will direct the play.    October 11 and 18 at 7 pm and October 13 and 20 at 2 pm.    October 11, Special for Seniors 65/+, Only $10    Tickets are $15 and there is limited seating. 4. “Colorfest of Art” Exhibition:   

• October 11 from 6 pm - 9 pm,   
• October 12 from 11 am - 5 pm   
• October 13 from 1 pm - 4 pm

5. WWII exhibit:      

• October 11, 18, & 19 from 5-7 pm

Anyone who wants to share photos, news clippings, ration cards, ribbons, banners, clothing, household articles, 1940s period pieces, or other World War II exhibits for display should contact Elaine Crain at 618-833-9441 or deliver the items to the Anna Arts Center Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 12, noon.

Town Square will be the center of it all, with live music by Richard "Rip" Lee Pryor and William Feigns, a wine garden with wine tasting and an outdoor craft fair.
