17th Annual Southern Illinois Irish Festival October 4-6

The 17^th annual Southern Illinois Irish Festival, October 4-6, will feature two days of Celtic Fair activities at Turley Park, and an opening night Irish concert in Carbondale.

This year's Irish Festival starts on Friday night October 4 with a concert featuring the traditional music trio Open the Door for Three.  The band includes Dublin-born Chicago resident Pat Broaders on vocals and bouzouki, and American fiddler Liz Knowles and her husband Kieran O’Hare on Irish pipes and whistles.  Their recent debut album has been called “One of the top Irish albums of the year” by Bryan Kelso Crow, host of WSIU’s “Celtic Connections.”  The three band members are mainstays of the Irish music scene, having played with Riverdance, Cherish the Ladies, Bohola, Secret Garden, The New York Pops, and mainstream artists like Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, and Josh Groban.  Their concert in Carbondale will take place at The Loft & Terrace at the Garden Grove Event Center, behind University Mall at 1215 East Walnut (formerly known as Sportsblast).  Tickets will be $10 at the door.  The concert starts at 8:00 pm and will be outdoors on the terrace if weather permits.  The venue offers a full bar for those 21 and older.

This year’s Celtic Fair will take place at Turley Park throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, October 5-6, with two stages of music and dance, Scottish Highland Games, an Irish Children’s Village and children's activities, Liam the Extra-Large Leprechaun, the Medieval Combat Society, Saluki dogs, Professor Play, chair massage, a bouncy castle, a bagpipes demonstration tent hosted by Sean Folsom, Celtic merchandise vendors, food and drink, and much more.  Saturday hours are 10-6, and Sunday hours are 11-5.  Admission at the park entrances will be $5 each day, with children 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.  Beer and wine will be sold in special areas. 

Saturday’s Celtic Fair performers include Open the Door for Three, Carbondale’s Irish band The Dorians, Johnston City Scottish duo Roisín Dubh, dancers and musicians from St. Louis Irish Arts, St. Louis Irish duo Kevin Buckley & Ian Walsh, local favorites Blackberry Blossoms, and local violinists Heartstrings.  Sunday’s “Celtic Roots, American Traditions” lineup includes local favorites Wil Maring & Robert Bowlin, Banjovi, The Dorians, Roisín Dubh, The Voyageurs, and After Barbed Wire (the Farmer’s Market buskers).

New Exhibit at anthill gallery celebrate National Latino Heritage Month

anthill gallery & vintage curiosities joins in the celebration of National Latino Heritage Month with a new exhibition of art.  "Arte Michoacana from Cobden”, art by Juana Duran, Lilia Duran, Catalina Charicata and Elizabeth Duran, opens at anthill gallery in Cobden on September 13. Sand painting, photography and traditional Mexican embroidery/crochet will be featured.

National Latino Heritage Month, initiated by President Lyndon Johnson and expanded by President Reagan, celebrates the anniversary of independence of five Latin American Countries, together with independence celebrations of Mexico, Chile & Brazil.

Juana Duran, born in Cheran, Michoacan, Mexico, settled in Cobden with her family in 1998.  This exhibition is a collaboration of talent from Juana’s family: Catalina Charicata, her maternal grandmother; Lilia Duran, her mother; and Elizabeth Duran, her sister.

Juana apprenticed with Cobden artist Victor DeGraff, honing her skills in sand painting prior to his death in 2008.  Sand painting is the art of pouring dyed or natural colored sands and pigments from minerals onto a hard or textured surface, or a stretched canvas and held in place with deluded glue. All of Juana's pieces are done with natural sand and minerals, creating beautiful, vibrant textured abstract and sculptural forms.  Her more figurative work includes finely detailed images of the lush orchard country gracing the hills of Cobden.

Catalina Charicata came to the United States in the early ’90’s, eventually settling with her family in Cobden, which she describes as a “little Michoacan”. She creates exuberantly colored traditional Mexican embroidery, embellished with delicate crochet lace.  These pieces, from a tradition handed down among Mexican women, are used as table cloths, wraps for keeping tortillas and bread hot and as decorative centerpieces. 

Lilia Duran takes traditional Mexican embroidery into new dimensions, experimenting with colorful borders of lavish crochet to frame a central image.

Elizabeth Duran, a senior in Cobden High School, turns her talents toward photography, capturing an array of digital images unique to Southern Illinois, in both color and black and white.  

This exhibition will open at anthill gallery located at 102 N. Front Street in Cobden, on September 13 through October 27.  A public reception will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. as part of the "Unity for the Arts" Colorfest weekend. Hours of operation for anthill gallery areWednesday - Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday noon to 4 p.m.  

"Forty Years of Painting" exhibit at Luna Gallery

anthill gallery & vintage curiosities announces a forty-year retrospective exhibition of the paintings of Jan York, Alto Pass.  “Forty Years of Painting” is exhibited through October in Cobden at the Luna Gallery in The Yellow Moon Cafe.  

Following York’s SIUC Art Education degree, she studied in Paris, and later served as Director of the Louisiana Art and Artist’s Guild.  York’s 1990 return to Southern Illinois offered the opportunity to work with Carbondale artist Larry Bernstein who “helped me loosen up my illustrative hand . . .”

“Flowers, fruit and folks have been the focus of my paintings for the past 40 years.” says Jan York.  Her exhibition of large, brilliant paintings illustrates her ability to “zero in on a certain area of one single flower and blow it up.”  This body of work includes her 1973 “Parts Equal the Whole” and 1993 “Sacha”, which demonstrates York’s range as a painter, from abstract to super-realism.

Original owner of Visions Art Gallery in Makanda, York emphasizes that “keeping cultural arts alive in Southern Illinois has always been one of my goals and places like Cobden and Makanda are fulfilling that goal”.

This exhibition is open at The Yellow Moon Cafe’s Luna Gallery, 110 N. Front Street in Cobden,  through October and supports the “Unity for the Arts” Colorfest weekend. Hours of operation for The Yellow Moon Cafe are Wednesday – Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – reopening 6 p.m. to Close; Saturday 10 a.m.  to Close.
