ILLINOIS ARTISANS PROGRAM DEADLINE OCT. 12
The Illinois Artisans Program is continually looking for talented new artists to join the program. The next deadline for artists to submit their work is October 12, 2012. To become a juried artist of the Artisans Program, an artist must live and work within the state. Their craft work must then be reviewed and accepted by a jury-panel sponsored by the Program. Once selected, their work can be shown at one or more Illinois Artisans Shops without re-jurying. Juried artists participate in art sprees, craft festivals and other events held at the shops in order to promote their work. For more information visit the website at http://www.museum.state.il.us/programs/illinois-artisans/ or call Mary Lou Galloway at 618-629-2220.
The 13th Annual Illinois Art & Wine Festival at Rend Lake on the grounds of Southern Illinois Art & Artisans Center will be held Sept 29 & 30. Fifty Illinois Artisans will demonstrate and sell craft at this popular outdoor festival. Taste varietals from thirteen local wineries, enjoy local specialty foods, and listen to local music while you Shop Illinois! LIONS & TIGERS & BEARS, OH MY! at SIU
“Warning: This exhibit is not appropriate for humorless people and Turkey Vultures being treated for chronic indigestion.”
That is the opening statement... Lions & Tigers & Bears, Oh My! (watch out for dancing mice too) is the new two-tier exhibition curated and written by Rachel Fischoff opening at the University Museum August 16th on the campus of Southern Illinois University.
For adults (and other tall people), Tier One is a whimsical presentation of a focused selection from the Museum’s collection of art and artifacts depicting creatures who share the planet with us.
Featured pieces include four lithographs from Dutch avant-garde pioneer Karel Appel’s colorful Cats Series and the first time display of four animal etchings by San Francisco’s famed master printmaker Beth Van Hoesen.
Special additions include Japanese painter Mori Sosen’s cloth scroll, “3 Baboons at Base of Tree” and Tucson Blacksmith Tom Bredlow’s “Little Mouse-Doorbell.”
“There’s also a sculpture of a cow wearing earrings,” said Guest Curator, Rachel Fischoff, “I think it will start a trend.”
Tier Two, right below, is an “Alternative Exhibit for Short People,” featuring depictions of “Animals Doing Funny Things,” by “Artists Under the Age of Ten.”
Southern Illinois children, age ten and under, were invited to use a medium of their choice, anything from computerized digital to smeared pureed carrots. (No one used pureed carrots, but one artist threatened to use cake icing)
One of the pieces that will be exhibited is by Cullen Shanahan of Carbondale. He calls it: “Doggie on the Dance Floor.”
A sample of the other art in the Tier Two part of the exhibit:
Gabriela Benyas The Violin Tree
Joshua Xiong Cheng, Yoshi Playing a Guitar
Abbey Ann Dorsey, A Bear pulling a rabbit out of a hat,
Nathaniel Fletter, A starfish playing soccer
Claire Gardner, The Hoola Cat
Erick Grimmer, Fly’s eat frogs
Sage Julian-Fralish, Circus Giraffe with a hula hoop
Lola King, Beever Mowing the crass
Catherine Lee, Snake Singing a Song
Estelle Miller, A zebra wearing lipstick and eating candy at the same time
Aidan Tunison, Mouse Playing Harmonica

ART GALLERY AND STUDIO AD IN TOURISM GUIDE
The River to River Visual Arts Association is seeking to place a one or two-page ad in the 2013 Southernmost Illinois Visitors Guide which will include information about the art centers, galleries, studios and artists in southern Illinois. Tourists visiting the area aren't always aware of the many artists who work and reside in the region, and by placing an ad in the guide, we hope to focus their attention on the opportunities for them to view and purchase local art and crafts.
Karen Hennrich, of Thomas Publishing, will be coordinating with art centers, galleries and studios to produce the advertisement.
The Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau director, Cindy Cain, and her staff distribute the guide at the tourism conventions they attend in large metropolitan areas, and copies of the guide are available at Illinois rest stops and many other places where tourists congregate. In 2013, 60,000 copies of the guide will be printed and distributed.
The cost of a one-page ad is $1,200 and a two-page ad is $1,800. The cost would be split among the art centers, galleries and studios that choose to advertise. We'd like to feature a map to show where the art centers, galleries and studios are located - similar to the one in the 2012 guide listing the vineyards. We are also considering publishing a brochure based on the same information contained in the ad for distribution at tourism offices, local restaurants, cabins, bed and breakfasts and civic centers.
If you are interested in being included in this advertising, please contact either Karen Hennrich at Thomas Publishing, (618) 549-2799, or me at sharonwittke@yahoo.com. by September 10. Indicating interest does not commit you to advertising - we would like to see how much interest there is in this type of art promotion. We're both also happy to answer any questions you might have.
