‘Unity Through the Arts’ self-guided tour Oct. 12
Venues featuring local art, music, poetry and theater will be featured during this year’s “Unity Through the Arts” self-guided tour on Saturday, October 12 during Colorfest Weekend.
Organizations that worked to produce a brochure and map of the venues and information about the art events include the
Anna Arts Center, Illinois Small Business Development Center at Southern Illinois University Carbondale,
Imagining Geographies – SIU, River‐to‐River Visual Arts Association, SIU Office of Economic and Regional Development, Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau, Union County Economic Development and the Union County Museum.
The brochure will be available at cabins, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, wineries, galleries and public buildings throughout Union County, as well as being distributed as a file that can be uploaded to websites and social media platforms.
The collaboration’s goals are to help individual artists and arts and cultural organizations promote their work in Union County and southern Illinois, and to recognize the contributions made by the creative industries to the cultural, economic, and social well‐being of the region.

“Arte Michoacana from Cobden,” an exhibit with works by Juana Duran, Lilia Duran, Catalina Charicata and Elizabeth Duran is on display through Oct. 27. Sand painting, photography and traditional Mexican embroidery/crochet will be featured. A public reception will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. as part of the “Unity for the Arts” Colorfest weekend.

River to River Visual Arts Association present the “Colorfest of Arts” gallery showfeaturing original paintings, fiber art, woodworking, jewelry and sculptures by regional artists. Gallery show is open Friday, Oct. 11 from 6 – 9 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 – 4 p.m.
Anna Arts Center and PAST present “Canteen,” a play adapted by Dr. Lynn Steveson about a World War II home front story from Bob Greene’s book, “Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen.” Show times are Fridays, Oct. 11 and 18 at 7 p.m. and Sundays, Oct. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

Alligator And The Blue Fox is a new business that features a variety of gifts and the works of several local artist. Store specials and activities are planned for all day Saturday, Oct. 12, and from 12:00 to 3:00 Susan Stokes will be demonstrating weaving techniques on a 7′ loom as She creates an alpaca shawl.
Hours of operation for The Yellow Moon Cafe are Wednesday – Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – reopening 6 p.m. to Close; Saturday 10 a.m. to Close.
“Forty Years of Painting,” a retrospective exhibition of the paintings of Jan York, Alto Pass is exhibited through October in Cobden at the Luna Gallery in The Yellow Moon Cafe.
Saturday, Oct. 12th SIWADE (Southern Illinois West African Drumming Ensemble) is performing at the Yellow Moon Café from 8:00 – 11:30 p.m.

Southpass Beads carries all supplies needed for making jewelry, offers classes, beading parties and minor jewelry repairs as well as handmade jewelry and beads.
The Yellow Rose Craft Boutique specializes in made-in-Illinois products, such as food items and candies. Owner Nealy Flamm also carries her own crafts, including greeting cards, aprons and hair adornments, as well as those of other local artists.

Cobden artist Ellen Spalt has been teaching people to paint for many years, as both a Cobden High School art teacher and as a community teacher. Works by her students, including southern Illinois wildlife and landscape paintings, will be on display at the Cobden First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Oct. 12.

Karen Fiorino is the creator of fun and functional majolica glazed pottery, immediately recognized throughout the area for its bright colors and unique and whimsical designs. Karen may be throwing, trimming or glazing pieces in her studio that day, and her work will be on display and available for sale.
Oct. 12 hours: All day and 8:00 p.m. for The Blue Billies show
“The Kings of Little Egypt” is a literary reading, presented by The Blue Billies, explores the kings of southern Illinois, including King Neptune, Pizza King or the King of Beers. Theatrical vignettes extolling the kingly qualities of the common man (and woman) are woven together with music.
The Blue Billies are dedicated to experimenting with the crafted word by pulling it off the page and into performance art. For more information and tickets, contact The Old Feed Store.

Special exhibit “Union County through the eyes of Maurice Metzger” will be on display. Metzger, who died in 2001, was a local artist who specialized in wildlife and local history, and also created cartoons for The Gazette-Democrat.

In the historic 1860s Shawnee Hills Barn, owners Tony and Rhea Calabrese have recreated blacksmithing, woodworking and stained glass art shops as they existed in the 1890s, the 1920s and the 1940s, showing the different technologies that were used during each era.
